Embracing Winter As An Asset

Winter placemaking is a means to reinvent and re-envision the ways that public spaces are created and used in order to meet the evolving needs of communities amid the challenges of the winter season. Winter Placemaking can be a means to build community trust and invest in the co-creation of public spaces that represent community needs all year round.

Check out our
Winter Placemaking Guide with examples from communities across North America that have embraced a warmer and more inclusive winter for all.

Strengthening Community Connections - The Future Of Public Health

Community-led action at the neighbourhood scale has proved vital to addressing complex health inequities during the COVID-19 pandemic in Canada. This report, commissioned by the Office of the Chief Public Health Officer (CPHO) at the Public Health Agency of Canada to inform the 2021 annual CPHO report, sets out four key actions by which public health in Canada can more fully incorporate and support the capacity of communities to take more control over the conditions for their own health and wellbeing.

The National Collaborating Centres for Public Health, in partnership with the authors and the Office of the CPHO are publishing this report to allow broader dissemination of these findings.

Book: Designing Child-Friendly High-Density Neighbourhoods

Play has an immense benefit on children’s health and wellbeing. How can we provide children with opportunities to freely play outdoors, walk independently, and feel a sense of belonging and ownership within their neighbourhoods? This publication by Cities for Play is a compilation of global best practices for designing child-friendly neighbourhoods, collected through a 10-week journey across the globe which the author Natalia Krysiak undertook as part of a Winston Churchill Fellowship. The book explores design interventions and planning policies from cities such as Tokyo, Singapore, London, Antwerp and Vancouver which aim to improve liveability for children by creating more playful urban environments.

A Children's Book About The Joy Of Cycling And The Future Of Cities.
Many children's books characterize cars as heroes or as cool objects. Children want to own a car from a very young age because of it. This is the exact opposite of what we should teach them. We need to change the way we tell stories about cities and show the benefits of cycling as a way to get to school, work, shopping and stay healthy.
Enjoy the story by Lior Steinberg and illustrations by Rita Kruglova in this new way of addressing mobility for kids.

New Podcast Alert: Arrested Mobility
On this podcast, host Charles T. Brown, MPA, CPD,  takes us to the streets of Philly, the sidewalks of Seattle, and the neighbourhoods of Kansas City, asking important questions about the experience of Black Americans while walking, running, riding bicycles, taking public transit or while driving. Charles takes us through the data and stories that demonstrate a legacy of exclusive policies and practices that have disproportionately negatively impacted the safe mobility of BIPOC in America.
