From the 8 80 Blog: How Melbourne Went From ‘Donut City’ to ‘Livable City’: Lessons from Our Study Group

The story from donut city to livable city is what brought 8 80 Cities and 15 city leaders from San Jose, CA to Melbourne for a five-day immersive study group workshop generously funded by Knight Foundation. We met with Melbournians from all sectors, municipal & state government, non-profit, consultants, retails experts, community leaders, indigenous elders, with the goal of understanding how to create a city that centers public life in all it’s efforts and manages change in an equitable and inclusive manner.

Dancing Tea Parties:  Loneliness Defeated

A family started with this interesting and different way of fighting loneliness: tea parties for their mom, with some of her neighbours, 1940's music and delicious food. The enterprise expanded to an afternoon cabaret-style show where people from 60 years old and up share great times enjoying their favourite vintage music, some drinks and fun, lots of fun. It's Ok to Be Human: The Story of Nancy Cleveland, Emerging City Champions Fellow 2019

As an Emerging City Champion 2019 fellow, Nancy Cleveland (Macon, Georgia) has developed two projects: “Head Space: Destigmatizing Mental Health,” which provides mental health resources for the Macon community, and Park Prescriptions, which implemented the project Walk With A Doc to promote better physical health.

How Bike Lanes Are Transforming Paris

In Ile-de-France—Paris and its suburbs—bicyclists now take 840,000 trips per day, according to a recent study, surpassing motorcycles and scooters. Car trips remain much higher at 14.8 million but have dropped 5 percent since 2010. 

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo's Plan Velo is expanding and has the goal to reach 840 miles of bike lanes by 2021. It's sure working, and Parisiennes are using their bikes more and more. In this article, Jeff McMahon talks about the need for network expansions to keep up with Mayor Hidalgo's goals and bring more users to the roads.
