Edinburgh: The First City in the UK to Join the Open Streets Movement

Following in the footsteps of Paris and New York, Edinburgh joined the open streets movement closing historic roads such as the Royal Mile, Victoria Street, part of the Grassmarket, New Street and Cockburn Street on Sunday, May 5th. Families and residents enjoyed a variety of events and activities. The program will take place on the first Sunday of every month as part of an 18-month trial.

Children Have Lost Their Freedom to Roam 
The percentage of children walking and bicycling to school has increasingly reduced in the last years. Even though distances to school are not that big, families still drive their kids. In this video, Streetfilms showcases that stark contrast in the freedom of mobility of children over time.

We have received close to 150 innovative and meaningful public space, mobility and civic engagement initiatives for the Emerging City Champions Fellowship Program 2019/2020. Join us at Heart of the City Conference in Montreal, June 12 -14. We are very excited that our Executive Director, Amanda O'Rourke, will be part of a dynamic session -Parks for All- along with the Toronto Skateboarding Committee and the Rick Hansen Foundation. The session will be about the value of engaging conflicting interests, accessibility, balancing park uses, and designing and programming parks for all ages. 

Heart of the City is hosted by Park People and will gather a unique cross-section of city park enthusiasts from across Canada, including community and non-profit group leaders, government staff, funders and park professionals.
