8 80 Streets Danforth: Watch the Making of Canada’s First-Ever Vision Zero Pop-up

On August 23– 24, 2019 one block of one of the busiest commercial corridors in North America (Danforth Avenue) was transformed into a street that exemplifies the City of Toronto’s aspiration to get traffic fatalities down to zero. It was Canada’s first-ever Vision Zero Pop-up. With temporary paint, and simple materials we showed that community can come together to build solutions for safer and more vibrant streets. The street makeover included expanded pedestrian space, protected bike lanes, parklets, street furniture, and community programming for all ages.

This project would not have been possible without the support of our private donor, The Better Block Foundation, Toronto City Councillor Brad Bradford, EcoKids, Danforth Mosaic BIA, Danforth East Community Association, residents of Danforth Avenue, and our amazing volunteers!

A special thank you to Spencer Bell Creatives for capturing this story.

What Does Walkability Have to Do with a Child’s Adult Earnings?

Not only families and kids who grow up in a walkable neighbourhood are less car-dependent, but they live closer to where jobs and economic opportunities are; they are more connected, more exposed to a diversity of people, experiences and develop a sense of belonging that comes from living in a walkable community.

Policy Makers Need to Embrace Ageing Population in the 21st Century

In a recent report, the Milken Institute Center for the Future of Aging talks about one of the biggest challenges of our century: how policy-makers, healthcare practitioners and systems, as well as the society in general, are handling the shift in the world's population -older adults are outnumbering younger people. In this comprehensive article, Robin Seaton Jefferson (Forbes) helps us understand the reasons for studying the demographics of ageing and policy changes to be adopted by 2030, when not only we'll have an increased number of older adults, but also new technologies, advancements in medicine and shifts in culture.

Why Open Streets Matters

In 2017, Open Streets Wichita opened a four-mile stretch of Douglas Avenue for a Sunday afternoon for people to walk, bike, and engage with their street without cars. People experienced their city from a new perspective.
