8 80 TowerPOPS Is Coming To Hillcrest Ave. And Woolner Ave. This Summer

Since launching 8 80 TowerPOPS in 2024, we’re now in our second year, and what a journey it’s been! We’ve been busy learning, deepening connections with residents, gathering ideas, and laying the groundwork for 8 80 TowerPOPS in Cooksville, Mississauga and Rockcliffe-Smythe, Toronto.

What we’ve been up to

Across both sites, we engaged with over 900 community members through more than 40 community events. From pop-ups to workshops, these activities were all focused on listening, co-designing, building trust and creating meaningful engagement opportunities.

In these conversations, we explored what makes a space feel welcoming, identified gaps for amenities in their neighbourhoods, and discussed the types of gathering places that would foster greater connection, encourage movement, and be inclusive for people of all ages and abilities. From community gardens to spaces for stargazing, we heard a wide range of creative ideas from both young and old.

Informed by resident input, guided by local advisors, and supported by detailed mapping of priority populations, we’re thrilled to announce the chosen sites for 8 80 TowerPOPS:

  • 67 Hillcrest Avenue in Cooksville
  • 190 Woolner Avenue in Toronto

We recognize that residents and local organizations already recognize these sites as cherished public spaces. In Toronto, the Toronto Community Housing site features a playground nearby a ravine and is surrounded by lush greenery. In Cooksville, a parking lot owned by TAS Impact Developers serves as a gathering place, hosting markets and community celebrations. These spaces already hold deep memories and meaning for residents. 8 80 TowerPOPS will build on that legacy, bringing new energy, creativity, and investment to these tower communities.

What’s next?

Whether you’ve been part of the process from day one, when last summer we launched the project during a rooftop garden party at 401 Richmond, where our office is located, or are just hearing about TowerPOPS for the first time, there’s so much more to come. From programs and performances to quiet places to sit and connect with neighbours, we imagine and hope that these spaces will evolve with the community.

Mark your calendars!

We have planned opening celebrations for July, and we hope you can join us. Stay tuned for event announcements, sneak peeks of the installations, and opportunities to get involved. Follow us on social media, and sign up for our 8 80 TowerPOPS newsletter to stay updated.
