Shared Places, Our Space

Markham’s Public Realm Strategy

Community engagement events were hosted at community centres and other public facilities throughout Markham. At these events, residents shared their vision for the future of Markham’s public realm by identifying its existing strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities.

8 80 Cities hosted six community workshops with stakeholders across the city. Our team facilitated interactive activities designed to spark creative and critical thinking, and challenged residents to imagine their ideal public spaces.

8 80 Cities prepared a final report containing key principles of a vibrant public realm, a summary of the community engagement process, and recommendations that the City of Markham can implement in the short-to-medium-term to improve the city’s public realm.

The ideas we collected during the community engagement sessions fed directly into the Shared Places Our Spaces: Markham’s Public Realm Strategy. This policy document will inform all public realm development and improvements in the City of Markham. By continuing to prioritize community needs, the City of Markham will be able to create an open, accessible and vibrant public realm for all.
